SEI is Selected to Design the City of Union City’s First Hybrid Pedestrian Beacon (HAWK)
Originally approved for use in the 2009 MUTCD, the beacons are pedestrian-activated warning device located at mid-block pedestrian crossings. The beacon will facilitate pedestrian crossings of Roosevelt Highway (SR14/US 29) near Westbrook Place. Work during the project’s concept phase, including comments from public outreach, showed significant demand for a pedestrian crossing of Roosevelt Highway at a mid-block location. Pedestrian demand is being generated by MARTA stops and commercial land use on the west side of the roadway. After SEI identified the potential need, a full warrant study and TE report were submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), which approved the hybrid pedestrian beacon as part of the final concept approval for the project.
Specific project tasks include design of ADA compliant crossing and connection to project sidewalks, pedestrian refuge island design, hybrid pedestrian beacon signal design and installation, utility relocation and coordination, transit stop design and MARTA coordination, and lighting improvements.
