City of Sandy Springs: Mt. Vernon Rd. @ Spalding Dr. Intersection Improvement

The purpose of the project is to improve safety and operational characteristics of the intersection of Spalding Drive and Mount Vernon Road. Currently, there is insufficient sight distance at the intersection due to a hill on Spalding Drive immediately west of the intersection.

Based on existing safety concerns and future traffic needs, SEI developed several concept designs for improved intersections, including road realignment and roundabout concepts. After considerable public outreach and an iterative concept design process, the City approved SEI’s design for a roadway realignment that will bring the intersection to the high point of the surrounding topography, eliminating the current site distance deficiencies. The new intersection will feature turn lanes, pedestrian accommodations, and will be suitable for future signalization.

Specific project tasks include traffic data collection, traffic forecasting, operational analysis, capacity analysis, public involvement, roundabout design, survey, utility coordination, and safety analysis.
